Well they don’t use creativity or for that matter do any real field work because for them India really comprises two cities: Delhi and Mumbai. So if Bunty of Kanjurmarg kisses Bubbly of Juhu at Bandra bandstand or wicked Vicky smokes pot, it makes headlines: never mind that the viewer sitting in Bhubaneshwar would rather watch K-serials for his daily dose of sensational drama. Reality television on news channels has become so sickening that most viewers prefer to watch commercials on the sports channel while having dinner. The problem is, not one channel dares to be different, 15 news channels all clones of one another: even the ticker color and content are the same (age of reusability engineering you see). All of them cover the kiss and the snort like the GDP of the nation depends on these two events.
I am not entirely dismissive of the 24X7 forum dedicated to news. In fact in a country like India it is very much needed. My point is that the lack of news is definitely not the reason for channels to stoop to such abysmal levels. There is news and it is definitely happening all around us, but the channels want to cover only “happening” stories: much like the Bollywood directors pandering to the “masses” with potboilers. If the kiss-and-yell formula works show it 24X7X30. In that sense the print medium (Slimes of India being an exception) has retained its dignity by focusing not on sound bytes and “live” data but on implications, the bigger picture and some investigative journalism. They are not trying to compete with the “live” television on who gets to shoot Aishwarya’s eyelashes first or gets the first words out of Rahul’s mouth (now don’t ask me which Rahul). In print, the experts get to express their thoughts freely without being interrupted, hackled, disconnected and veered away by the TV journalists. At least the back end editing is appropriately done to prevent the interviews from appearing like police interrogations and the reader is spared the grotesque digressions and arguments.
Instead of swarming like ants to a grain of sugar, they could use a bit of creativity to be different.
Journalism today, is a mere spectator and commentator to say the least. In fact it is much worse; it serves like a crude form of entertainment by titillating and distracting people from the real social political and economic issues. Gone are the days when active journalism moved masses and governments into action, today it is the voyeuristic needs of the masses and airtime for politicians that drive the newspapers and channels.

That's awfully pessimistic. And only partly true. Channels like NDTV have good journalists and a good "culture" when it comes to reporting - in spite of being 24x7.
I do agree the print media are somewhat better than the television channels. The way I see it, we are heading towards the American TV formula - which is a bad thing - but it is tempered by Indian orthodoxy, which is a good thing.
prefer CNN-IBN and Kirthi a few months down the line our 24/7 channels will start beaming programmes that are similiar to Hells Chicken (i know I know). But tell me when do you have time to watch all these channels ? Bunty kissing Bubbly ? and wicked Vicky sniffing pepsi(coke)? .
Psst did you know that children in some countries sniff glue to escape hunger pangs.
So what was i saying :) Welcome back Kirthi!
Hey SP,
Are you giving me the example of NDTV? Ok they are just a rung above Messrs. Aaj Tak and co.
And are you talking about pessimism? Well, if you didn't notice our entire newsworld is so full of pessimists: ever get to see a newspaper or a channel which is optimistic about anything? Except for an odd occasion when Indian cricket team shows sparks of talent, in which case they go overboard with their praise, I have hardly seen the media positive about something.
Vc,
I know you are just trying to be mean. Hell's Kitchen? Wow!! Bring it on.
I cannot but agree with you in totality about the sorry state of affairs when it comes to India's news channels but then these news channels are competing not with themselves but with other entertainment channels to stay afloat. This, I think is the single most important reason for the deteriorating quality of news and the inclusion of too much sensationalism because you want the News at 10 to be as melodramatic as Kyunki.. (Is this soap still on air?), as nail biting as the World's most amazing videos, as comic as The planet's funniest animals, and as spicy as ---fill up the blanks--- and so the denouement is a potboiler masquerading as a News bulletin. Further, though we have taken huge strides when it comes to education and awareness, however, India as a nation is still too ignorant and nonchalant to start appreciating good NEWS to help sustain the huge number of News channels operating today. I still remember the days when I'd wait patiently each evening for Minu, Sunit Tondon and not to mention Prannoy Roy present "The World This Week" and thoroughly enjoy the show every weekend. Gone are those days!!
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
See See even hell boy agrees with me.. and psst kyunki is still going strong... infact there was this special 1 hour episode where 3 serials are combined .. i mean Anjali, Parvathi and that other chik all in one serial..Vc faints..
"the fourth estate often prejudiced, foists its own opinions"
Contradicts
"Journalism today, is a mere spectator"
Hoh,
So true, we get only what we deserve!
Vc,
Ack! You watch them????? Now don't gimme mommy-controls-the-remote-nonsense. You have a choice to not watch it by shutting ur eyes and going to sleep and yet you watch it! Thu thu.
Anony,
How are those two sentences contradictory: making a statement, ranting about something and taking sides (prejudiced opinions) is not going to move even a pebble off the road!! And even if it could have, the priorities of the fourth estate are so misplaced that the only way the pebble would ever move off the road is when it gets weathered into sand.
I do agree with the article you posted. Though media has given their valuable space(like karishma kapoor's row with her husband) to Anti-Reservation protests, Govt. was deaf. Gone are the days that Govt. reacts to the newspapers.
Here newspapers become the postmortem report rather than information to act on.
Kirthi, No one else could have put it in a better way. I really hope these ppl follow the pattern discussed !!!
keep writing, it was a pleasure to read.
Here's my response to your "bunty and bubbly" and Rahul episode:
You watched them?????
Now don't gimme daddy-controls-the-remote-nonsense. You have a choice to not watch
it by shutting your eyes and going to sleep and yet you watch it!
You could quite easily have watched the Animal Planet or Devil’s Advocate but you chose to watch the above said incidents. Now don’t you dare give me “ they were showing it in all the channels “ . You too my dear have a choice.
Shri,
Yes and I feel that the media itself is responsible for its debased state. Btw are you one of the 'shri's I know?
Avenger,
Thanx for the compliment. Keep visiting.
Vc,
Of course I watched Animal Planet and THE on Nat geo. I think I have a better idea: I should retune all my channels to animal planet discovery, history, nat geo or ESPN. Haven't seen devil's advocate :(
awww,
I am totally an Entertainment Channel fan -
E! Channel - YES!
VH1 - Ooo Yes!
When I see Oscars ... I equally enjoy red-carpet walks ...
So i guess all the gossip news are for people like me ...
Ash's eye lashes - her trump card ...
She needs a bit of publicity for using her beauty as brand name to divert attention for her works for AIDS and Eye-donation.
well said
Hi Kirthi,
Nice blog!!
Now, I may sound like a cynical conspiracy theorist but from what I have recently read in Hindu, most of the media channels are controlled by big corporate houses affiliated to governments (directly or indirectly). The paper claims it to be global phenomenon. This, they say, is the reason why media hides a lot of news content.
Personally I don’t believe it. I believe that creative media can survive only in environment of unrestrained competition and absolute freedom. I blame the government's censor policies for present state of media.
Snigger !!
Intern,
Well the channels you named are meant to cater to gossip news and the works and it actually clearly categorises the content (entertainment in this case) thus giving the viewer the choice to decide right at the onset whether he wants to watch it or not. The so-called news channels garb it under the pretext of being "national news" just to grab eyeballs!
Roshan,
Thanx. keep dropping by :)
Mohit,
Thanx.
You wouldn't be far from the truth if you believe that. It is true esp in the south, more specifically TN: If you ever watched Sun and Jaya TV during the assembly elections you'd know what I mean!
All the same I do not agree on unrestrained freedom: people generally tend to misuse it.
Govt censor policies??? Well, you can't get more freedom of press than you have in India!
Like vultures they wait with bated breath for prey they may feed on for all to see. Unfortunately, like vultures they do not distinguish between the dying and the living, intent as they are on reducing the latter to the former.
Hi Kirthi,
I am a diehard capitalist and I have good reasons for being one. Maybe, I'll explain that to you sometime later. My point is, freedom of press is prerequisite in any democracy and in India we do not have democracy, we have Mobocracy, so as to say. This is evident from our decadent judicial system exemplified by Jesica Lall and other high profile murders. It will be credulous to believe that any freedom can survive in such environment. Sun and Jaya TV are sponsored by political parties not big corporations.
